FRA-update
Hell yeah I was right. Too bad that it feels terrible being right 'bout this one. For you Swedish speaking/reading readers out there you can check out this blog and you'll see that the amount of blog posts about FRA has pretty much dwindled down to nothing. Self destructed. I knew this would happen, I told my cousin this. He didn't believe me, he mentioned that there would be more marches and protests against the law.
I'll summarize the post I linked too:
Since the controversial FRA law was introduced, voted on and implemented the blog posts about FRA have been the single biggest topic on the Swedish bloggosphere. Bigger than sex, parties, clothes, fashion; you name it. But three days ago FRA was beaten by the noble cause of outfits. Yes, you heard me correctly; outfits.
Our concern for our private communications and well being have been replaced by our concern for what to wear. Well, that says it all. We now got all the evidence we need. We ARE the Doomed Generation. Yes, I haven't posted anything about FRA myself, that's is true. How low have we sunk?
There are three quotes that are fitting for the feelings I have right now;
"America...just a nation of two hundred million used car salesmen."
"All that is necessary for the forces of evil to win in the world is for enough good men to do nothing."
"In a democracy, people usually get the kind of government they deserve"
The first quote comes from my muse and hero; Hunter S. Thompson. Just substitute America for Sweden; hell, substitute America for The World, we are ALL in it together. What does the quote mean then? Used car salesmen? Hunter used that metaphor to describe the people that voted for Nixon, who were mentally numb and later on who voted for Bush/Cheney. Is use the quote in the sense of mentally numb.
Mentally numb... That's what we all are. Used car salesmen interested in simple pleasures, spending money to get a safe and legal high, drinking for joy and forgetting the Bad Craziness all around us. Yes, sir, all of us are beginning to look like that; the young, the old and the dead.
We, the Young, used to be a major force whenever we got together and did something. I often take my examples from American politics and history and I will do it once more. Remember the War in Vietnam? All the marches, protests, hippies, intellectuals and Young people that rose as one and said; No! That generation is old now and the hippies are all brain-fried from the LSD. So, it's our turn to pick up where they left and rise as one to protest against the FRA-law that slowly but surely erodes our Rights.
The second quote, a more famous one, was made by a man I also admire; Edmund Burke, the Father of Conservatism, if you like. He was also a liberal on some issues. Well, there's discussion about if he really made that quote or not but that's not important. What's important is the truth in it.
We only need the to do nothing and evil will win and not only win but Triumph over us and we sure are doing nothing; nothing at all. Yes, there were protests, there were blog posts, there were marches; but now? What comes next? We have witnessed the start, we all know that, but how does it all end? Right now it looks like it will die with a whimper, the protests against FRA will go down in history as a futile footnote; an anticlimactic moment that enden in even more (young) people becoming mentally numb and sure of the fact that the people governing us don't listen.
It's a dangerous mindset being numb because that's when you are most likely to get raped; by an uknown assailant or by our own government. That's sad, very sad but also very true. When we stop thinking, when we start accepting that protesting is Futile then we have signed off ourselves as people that matters. Next step is to stop voting and we can't have that. So come on, every one here; let us not become numb as the politicians (no matter what affiliation they got; left or right) want us to become. Why not? I'll tell you
The third and last quote is also of uncertain origin but nevertheless true (some say Adlai Stevenson, some say Hunter, some say Thouereu). In a democracy people usually get the kind of government they deserve and since we are becoming more mentally dumb each day and surrendering more and more of our Freedom (!) to the politicians and their guards we deserve the Worst. You're not fighting for your civil rights? Well, you deserve to loose them. You are not fighting to be safe from improper seizure in your home? Let the cops storm your house and confiscate everything you own. You are not fighting against FRA? Let the FRA listen what you tell your friends over the Internet then. You have NO RIGHT. You got what you DESERVED.
Now I'm raving again, you probably don't want or need to hear this 9:17 in the morning when you're drinking coffee and preparing for anohter hellishly hot day A.D. 2008. So I'll go easy on you and leave you with what I just wrote. Okay? Take it easy for now but always remember what I told you; keep it hidden away until you see that I was right. Then use what I've told you; fight for your Rights.
So long and lick that envelope,
Dr. H.R.P.
